The town of Northampton emerged as England s main shoemaking town as far back as the 1600s. History records show that in 1642 the town produced 4000 shoes and 600 boots for the army and even larger numbers for Oliver Cromwell's army in 1648.

The industrial revolution in the late 1800's changed the working practices of shoemakers forever, as the centralisation of production and the use of machinery made larger outputs possible. Many of Northampton's most famous factories were founded during this period of change and by 1831 a third of all the men living in Northampton were shoemakers.
